Baby birds and a new word – leucism

The first broods of birds are just fledging. The house sparrows were the first, and this one, with strong white markings especially on its wings, looked distinctly different; in a very pretty way.

Apparently, this reduction in pigmentation is quite common in sparrows (and lots of other birds and animals). It is called “leucisim” – a new word for me:), from leukos, white.
